Course Syllabus

Ellsworth High School
Visual & Performing Arts Department
Welcome to Digital Art!

COURSE OVERVIEW:
This is a studio art course offered for you artists that are interested in non-traditional art making forms. New media (digital art) is a whole new way to solve the problem of visual communication. The world as we know it has officially changed into a highly digital place – email, the internet, digital phones, and digital cameras have changed how society functions. It is important for you (the student) to embrace these changes and think about how they can aide you in personal expression.
In this class you will be working with digital cameras, scanners, and Adobe Photoshop in order to solve visual assignments. Though you will be using non-traditional art making materials, you must still think of the traditional Elements and Principles of Design when creating your compositions and imagery. These ideas are absolutely key in making good art. As well as creating art, you will be looking at and critiquing other people’s work (famous artists, as well as your classmate’s). Through critique of your own and other’s work, you will learn new ideas about what makes a successful piece. That knowledge should then be put to use in your next works – you must always be willing to adapt your technique and have a positive attitude in order to become a better artist.

EXPECTATIONS:
  • You must ALWAYS come prepared to class!! Specifically, this means a fully charged laptop – coming to class without your laptop results in detention.
  • You must respect the materials (No horsing around with the equipment – it is very expensive!!! Misuse will lead to loss of privilege with all equipment).
  • You must spend an ample amount of time on your work – a good piece can not be completed in 15 minutes!
  • You must create appropriate artwork – no vulgar imagery at all (guns, drug references, inappropriate symbols, etc).
  • You must create original artwork – no copying other’s ideas!
  • You must have a positive attitude and a willingness to better yourself as an artist.
  • You must respect your own artwork – take care of it…do not fold it, roll it, crumple it, or let it get torn. Keep paper crisp!
